Alawites consider themselves distinct from classical Sunni and Shi'ite beliefs, although they have roots in Shi'a Islam. They believe in a mystical interpretation of the Quran, and they very different rituals, such as the consumption of wine. Alawites in Lebanon are usually in the North.
